What Is A Sitemap

Why Do You Need A Sitemap?

Before we get into why you NEED a sitemap, lets discuss what a sitemap is:

A sitemap is an XML file that lists all the URL’s within your domain. It is basically a summary of all the pages you have on your site; contact us page, services page, home page, blog posts and so on.

While some websites still have HTML sitemaps today, overall the usage of sitemaps have evolved.

A sitemap allows search engine crawlers to get to all areas of your website with more efficiency. No matter the size of the page.

So Why Are Sitemap’s Important?

Well the quicker search engines can crawl your website and index your content, the quicker you will be discovered and ranked.

Sitemaps will not boost your search engine rankings directly but allow search engines to better crawl your website. Therefore, their bots can find more content and start showing it in search results thus resulting in higher rankings.

Assisting search engines to navigate through your website effortlessly plays a role in your search engine optimization strategy.

Search engines find webpages through links. Therefore, if your website only has a handful of external backlinks, then a sitemap is HUGE for helping the search engines find pages on your site.

Another example is if you run an ecommerce website. Ecommerce websites normally have hundreds of links. So unless you internally link perfectly and have tons of external links, search engines will struggle to find all your web pages. This is one reason why sitemaps are important.
